Applications of Fluorspar Powder in Different Industries

Fluorspar, which is also termed as fluorite, is a colorful isometric mineral which is derived from the fluo-a stream or flow of water. The word fluorite has been originated from Latin word fluo, that stands for "to flow" as the mineral is applied to enhance the fluidity of slags applied in smelting flux.

Applications of Fluorspar in Optical Industry

Fluorite is a colorful element and it’s used for ornamental and lapidary purposes. This element is used for smelting, and also in producing some enamels and glasses. The purest form of fluorite is also the intermediate root of majority of fluorine-containing fine chemicals.

The transparent (optically-clear) fluorite lenses have low dispersion, due to which the lenses made from this element has less chromatic aberration that adds value to the telescopes and microscopes. This element is also applied in the far-ultraviolet range as the traditional glasses are too absorbent for use for this purpose.

Industrial Uses of Fluorspar

Fluorspar powder has three primary industrial applications. First is natural fluorite that corresponds to various grades of purity. Another is metallurgical grade fluorite, which is the lowest of the three types of fluorspar and it is conventionally used to reduce the melting point of raw materials to remove impurities in the steel production, and also in the production of aluminum. The intermediate, also termed as ceramic grade fluorite, is mostly used in the production of enamels, opalescent glass, and households and cooking utensils. The top grade, "acid grade fluorite", is generally applied in the production of hydrogen acid and hydrofluoric fluoride by decomposing sulfuric acid using fluorite.
